A recent YouGov poll for Sky News has revealed a divided nation, with half of voters predicting a leadership change by the end of 2026. The poll suggests that Sir Keir Starmer's position as Prime Minister is under scrutiny, and many are questioning his ability to lead the Labour Party into the next general election.
The Labour benches are reportedly uneasy, with rumors circulating that prominent figures are considering a move if the upcoming local elections in May don't go as planned. Potential challengers include Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, and former deputy leader Angela Rayner.
Despite Labour chair Anna Turley's insistence that Sir Keir will "absolutely" still be Prime Minister next Christmas, the poll paints a different picture. Thirty-one percent of respondents believe he will likely be replaced by this time next year, while a further 19% are certain he won't make it to 2027. Only 35% of those surveyed have faith in Starmer's leadership prospects.
The poll also highlights a stark assessment of the government's economic performance. A staggering 71% of respondents believe the economy has worsened over the past 12 months, with just 7% perceiving any improvement.
"The numbers speak for themselves," said one political analyst. "Voters are clearly concerned about the direction of the country and the government's handling of key issues."
But here's where it gets controversial: while many voters are calling for a change in leadership, some argue that replacing Starmer might not be the solution. "It's easy to point fingers at the leader," said another analyst, "but the issues run deeper than that. The Labour Party needs to address its policies and reconnect with voters if it wants to regain trust."
The poll, conducted between December 21st and 22nd, also revealed a pessimistic outlook on personal finances. Only 15% of respondents expect their financial situation to improve over the next year, while 40% believe it will worsen.
However, there are signs of slight optimism compared to the aftermath of November's budget. A month ago, 56% expected their finances to decline, and 75% criticized the government's economic management.
In terms of voting intentions, Reform UK remains in the lead, although their support has dropped from 28% to 25% in the past week. Labour has gained two percentage points, now sitting at 20%, while the Tories and Liberal Democrats have both increased their support to 19% and 15%, respectively. The Greens, however, have seen a slight decline, dropping to 15%.
