A bold move by President Trump has sparked a rare moment of dissent among congressional Republicans. The idea of the United States taking control of Greenland has caused an uproar, with key figures in the party speaking out against it. This is a controversial stance, especially considering Trump's past threats and actions, which have left many questioning his motives.
The recent US raid in Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, seems to have reignited Trump's interest in Greenland. However, this pursuit has faced strong opposition from both the American public and Denmark, with the latter warning that an invasion would be the end of NATO.
But here's where it gets interesting... Despite typically avoiding open disagreement with the president, some Republicans are taking a stand. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina boldly stated, "Somebody needs to tell the president that the people of Greenland have historically been pro-American." He emphasized the absurdity of the situation, given Greenland's independent status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska echoed these sentiments, warning that Trump's threats could lead to the end of his presidency. He urged Republicans to draw a line, saying, "He hates being told no, but in this case, we need to be firm."
Even former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell compared the potential seizure of Greenland to Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan, a move that was unpopular during his presidency. McConnell warned that such an action would "incinerate the trust of loyal allies" and bring no meaningful change to US access to the Arctic.
Trump's expansionist tendencies have been on full display during his second term, with public declarations of interest in annexing Canada, the Panama Canal, and now Greenland, despite it being a NATO ally. This has caused alarm among European countries, with troops from France, Germany, the UK, Norway, and Sweden arriving in Greenland this week, both as a show of support and to assess the feasibility of a sustained deployment.
The meeting between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark did not sway the US president's demands. Trump continues to insist that Greenland is needed for national security, and he has even threatened to impose tariffs on countries opposing his campaign.
And this is the part most people miss... Trump's ability to keep most Republicans in line, even on foreign policy issues, is remarkable. Last week, when the Senate advanced a war powers resolution regarding Venezuela, Trump's reaction was swift, stating that the five Republicans who supported it "should never be elected again." Two of those senators changed their votes this week to kill the resolution.
It's worth noting that some of the Republicans speaking out against Trump's Greenland campaign, including Tillis, Bacon, and McConnell, are not seeking re-election this year. Senator Lisa Murkowski, a centrist from Alaska, also voiced her disagreement, emphasizing the importance of viewing Greenland as an ally, not an asset.
Even those closer to the president seem uneasy about his campaign, particularly the threat it poses to NATO. Congressman Mike Turner of Ohio, head of the US delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of the Danish and Greenlander people.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana added, "To invade Greenland, a fellow NATO country, would be weapons-grade stupid. President Trump is not weapons-grade stupid."
