A Champion's Journey: Repeating History in F2
In the world of motorsport, where talent and ambition collide, a young Brazilian driver, Rafael Camara, is poised to write his name into the annals of F2 history. But here's where it gets intriguing: Camara's path to dominance is paved with the success stories of his karting teammates, and he's determined to follow in their formidable footsteps.
Take a moment to reflect on the 2021 CIK-FIA European Karting Championship. Three standout drivers from the Kart Republic squad immediately catch your eye: Kimi Antonelli, the champion and Mercedes protege; Arvid Lindblad, the Red Bull Junior in third; and sandwiched between them, Rafael Camara, the Ferrari Driver Academy prodigy. Camara's journey since then has been nothing short of remarkable, leading him to the pinnacle of Formula Regional European in 2024 and the crown of Formula 3 dominance in 2025. Now, he's set his sights on the 2026 F2 title, a feat already accomplished by his immediate predecessors as F3 champions, Gabriel Bortoleto and Leonardo Fornaroli.
But here's the part most people miss: Camara's story is not just about talent and hard work; it's a tale of family legacy and a hidden motorsport heritage. His older brother initially dipped his toes into motorsport, but it was Camara who truly embraced the racing spirit. Growing up, he watched his brother's attempts at racing, and at the tender age of five, he expressed his desire to start racing too. His father, though a racing enthusiast, had never been part of the motorsport world, but fate had a different plan.
Camara's maternal grandparents held the key to his destiny. His grandmother, Niege Rossiter, had raced touring cars on the streets of Recife in the early 1960s, co-driven by her father. She was a talent, identified by the Brazilian magazine Quatro Rodas, who asked if she aspired to race at Interlagos, the heart of Brazilian motorsport. Her response was both matter-of-fact and charming: "I confess that I do, unless a handsome young man appears, someone I like. Because then I'll end up going to the kitchen, which is my other hobby."
Fast forward to today, and Niege's talent might have been recognized in the F1 Academy. Instead, she chose the kitchen, but her legacy lived on in her grandson. Camara's journey to the top was not without its challenges. He moved from Recife to Sao Paulo, then to the US, and finally to Europe, all before the age of 20. His parents, with no motorsport exposure, supported his dreams, and his grandmother's stories inspired him.
In 2021, Camara's karting prowess caught the eye of Ferrari, who selected him for their scouting camp and world finals. He joined Ollie Bearman in the Prancing Horse's Academy, a move that changed his career trajectory. "With their support, I grew not just as a driver but as a person," Camara recalls. From there, he moved to Maranello, Italy, and into the orbit of Prema Racing, a dominant force in the motorsport world.
However, Camara's journey was not without setbacks. COVID-19 struck twice in 2022, forcing him to miss his debut car racing weekend in the UAE F4 Championship and later, a German round. Despite these challenges, he finished third in both German and Italian F4, with his teammate, Antonelli, taking the crowns. But Camara learned and grew, and by the end of the season, he was more competitive, setting the stage for his next move.
For his step into Formula Regional in 2023, Camara left the familiar embrace of Prema and joined Trident, moving once again, this time to Milan. It was a tough decision, but he found a new family in Trident. "The vibe on the team was amazing," he recalls. Under the guidance of team manager Giacomo Ricci, a Euro F3000 champion himself, Camara thrived. "Giacomo's help was crucial to my success," Camara acknowledges.
In 2024, Camara earned his title, a testament to his hard work and the lessons learned from managing the ups and downs of the previous year. But his eyes are now set on F3, where he dominated last year, winning the title with a round to spare. "I was surprised, especially with the new car. Our approach was to keep working hard, and I focused on doing my best every weekend," he reflects.
Now, Camara is heading to Invicta Racing, the same team that Bortoleto and Fornaroli joined after their F3 triumphs. He's aware of the pressure but remains focused on controlling what he can. "My focus is to win, and I'll fight for the championship," he asserts. As he prepares for the 2026 F2 season, Camara knows a Ferrari FP1 runout awaits, but he's not getting ahead of himself. "I need to do a good job in F2 first," he says with a shy laugh.
Camara's journey is a testament to the power of legacy, hard work, and a supportive family. Will he repeat history and claim the F2 title? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Rafael Camara is a name to remember in the world of motorsport.
