The crew is expected to leave the station no earlier than 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, January 14, with a targeted landing near California early on Thursday morning, January 15, depending on weather conditions and the recovery progress of the affected astronaut.
This decision comes after a serious medical issue was reported among the astronauts, prompting a swift response from NASA. The agency's administrator, Jared Isaacman, made the announcement during a briefing, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. This is the first medical evacuation from the ISS in its 25-year history, indicating the severity of the issue.
The astronaut in question, a member of Crew-11, fell ill with a serious but undisclosed condition. NASA's chief health and medical officer, Dr. James Polk, assured the public that the astronaut is stable, but the lack of a diagnosis poses a lingering risk.
