Lego's New Smart Bricks: A Revolution or a Regression?
Lego, the iconic Danish toymaker, has just unveiled its latest innovation: Smart Bricks. These tech-infused building blocks promise to bring Lego sets to life with sounds, lights, and responses to movement. But is this a leap forward, or does it risk diminishing the very essence of what makes Lego special? Let's dive in.
Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas, the Smart Play system integrates electronic components into the classic plastic bricks. Lego touts this as their "most revolutionary innovation" in nearly 50 years. The Smart Bricks, launching in March with a new Star Wars set, aim to enhance the play experience.
However, the introduction of Smart Bricks has sparked debate among play experts. Josh Golin, executive director of Fairplay, a children's wellbeing group, believes these bricks "undermine what was once great about Legos." He argues that the magic of Lego lies in a child's imagination, which is the driving force behind the creations. "Children's Lego creations already do move and make noises through the power of children's imaginations," he told the BBC.
Professor Andrew Manches of the University of Edinburgh agrees, highlighting the freedom Lego offers to create, recreate, and adapt simple blocks into endless stories powered by a child's imagination. But, he also acknowledges the potential in Lego's efforts to merge physical and digital play, with tools that respond to children's interactions. Julia Goldin, Lego's chief product and marketing officer, sees digital technology as an opportunity to "expand physical play and physical building." She emphasizes that their smart range weaves interactivity "seamlessly" with physical products.
So, what exactly are Lego Smart Bricks?
These bricks can sense motion, position, and distance, allowing models to react in various ways. Each 2x4 brick contains sensors, lights, a sound synthesiser, an accelerator, and a custom-made silicon chip. They are designed to be used with Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags tiles, which trigger different sounds or reactions when they interact. For instance, a Lego birthday cake can play a cheer and a happy birthday song when its "candles" are blown out. A Lego helicopter makes whooshing sounds when moved, with its Smart Brick lighting up red upon crashing.
Tom Donaldson, head of Lego's Creative Play Lab, explains that the technology is intended to complement children's natural play, hoping to "inspire and surprise the user to keep them continuing to play." He envisions a platform that will last for many years.
Professor Manches notes that the reduced cost and size of components have allowed more toy makers to integrate digital technology seamlessly. But here's where it gets controversial... Concerns remain about the security and privacy of these new smart toys, especially those integrating AI. Manches emphasizes the need to be critically reflective of the design of these toys and their influence on children's lives.
Lego has experimented with digital experiences before. Since 2017, they've released augmented reality apps and collaborated with video game publishers like Nintendo and Fortnite-maker Epic Games. In 2020, they released a Super Mario Minifigure with a tiny display screen.
Lego CEO Niels B. Christiansen stated in the 2024 Annual Report that they've increased spending on digital technology as a "strategic area" for the company.
