Ignite Student Ministries
Nelson is a second-year student at Candler School of Theology of Emory University. He moved to Atlanta in 2015 to pursue his Masters in Divinity. Nelson and his wife Michelly have an infant daughter, Sophia. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Nelson and Michelly have worked with youth and young adults for over seven years. Nelson believes that Youth Ministry is the strongest chance the Church has to stay healthy, vibrant and reinvent itself in this ever-changing, rapid and fluid culture. Nelson heard the calling to Ministry at his senior year in Law School and since then has served God and the church in different positions. Most recently he started the path towards ordination as an elder in the United Methodist Church. During his free time, he reads books, listens to music and plays his acoustic guitar.
The vision of the Ignite Student Ministries is to develop a Christ-centered fellowship of young people that know they matter, and to provide them with a space where they are welcomed, heard, and accepted into a spiritual family that will not judge them. Our goal is to ignite the students within our church so that they can be great examples of God’s light. It is open to anyone who is in the 6th grade to 12th grade.
At Bethesda, we believe that the youth are a vital part of the church family. Our youth workers strive to model, counsel, teach, pray, support, mentor and train young people to be confident that they are loved unconditionally by God and develop them as leaders now.
It is our desire that our young people grow in their desire to know God through a personal relationship with Jesus and experience the power of the Holy Spirit in their everyday lives, not just when they are at church. We treat each student as the unique individual they were created to be. We strive to find what inspires them and help them find the direction that God has for them.
We adhere to Safe Sanctuary guidelines to take all precautions to make sure that the youth entrusted to us are kept safe and are treated with Dignity. All youth counselors are trained in these policies and go through background checks.
